Day 1: Pick up and transfer to Gisenyi and cross into Congo via Goma

Upon arrival at Gisenyi, you will be picked up by our company guide from your hotel or airport early in the morning. During this tour, you will have the option of visiting the genocide memorial sites in Kigali city, as well as Nyanza’s oldest king’s palace. After a transfer to Gisenyi, you cross into the Congo via the Goma border, where you will have dinner and overnight accommodations either at the Mikeno lodge (luxury), Lac Kivu Lodge (mid range), or Ihusi Hotel (budget).

Day 2: Hike Mt. Nyiragongo

Start your day early with breakfast at the hotel and then set off for the Kibati Patrol post, where the hike up Nyiragongo Volcano starts from. Hiking officially begins at 9:00 am, with a briefing on what to expect during the hike and what to expect on the way. Packing right for the hike is very important, and if you can, hire a porter that will help you. For your safety and security, armed guards will accompany you on your hike as you are guided by your guide. A typical day of hiking lasts for the entire day, and the group’s fitness level determines how quickly or slowly they hike throughout the day.

Please take note that the group moves as one unit and rests at the same time as they move. The moment you reach the top of the mountain, you will check into your cabins and you can enjoy the view of the boiling lava at night from your cabin.

Day 3: Descend Mount Nyiragongo

After breakfast, you will descend back to the starting point of the hike before you begin the descent back to your car. Afterwards, you will be transferred to Gisenyi via Goma, and then on to Kigali for lunch, before heading straight to the airport for your flight back home.
